EuroProBasket is proud to announce that New York native Chris Ward has officially signed with a team in Norway to finish the current season. A dynamic 5’9” point guard from Alexander Hamilton High School, Ward’s path to the professional ranks is a testament to the power of a second chance. After two years away from the game and a stint in welding school, Ward arrived in Valencia to rebuild his career, ultimately leading to a dominant 25-point debut in Norway.
Ward’s journey is far from traditional. Before arriving in Valencia, he spent a year working as a welder, a period during which he had to rebuild his confidence and his game from the ground up. Reflecting on the impact of the program, Ward stated:
“EuroProBasket changed my life. I took two years away from basketball and even went to welding school… When I came to the academy, I was rebuilding my belief in myself. What I found there was more than basketball—it was family.”
Transitioning from the high-intensity style of New York basketball to the disciplined European game requires more than just talent—it requires a total shift in mentality. During his seven months at EuroProBasket, Ward immersed himself in the technicalities of the game. By breaking down EuroLeague film and focusing on “read-and-react” basketball, he sharpened his understanding of spacing, pace, and decision-making.
As he noted regarding his development: “Adaptability is everything. Scoring is important, but decision-making and trust are bigger. If you can adapt to a coach’s philosophy and fully commit to playing the right way, you’ll succeed.”
A pivotal moment in Ward’s development occurred during a high-stakes exhibition against the Luxembourg National Team. “A real turning point was playing against the Luxembourg National Team,” Ward explained. “We performed at a high level, and that game gave us the confidence to know we could compete anywhere in Europe.”
When Coach Tasos recently accepted a Head Coaching position in Norway, he recruited Chris—along with another EuroProBasket standout—to join him. Having an existing relationship was key to Ward’s transition: “I already understand his system, his expectations, and how he wants the game managed. That familiarity allows me to play with confidence.”
The preparation in Valencia paid off instantly. In his debut game in Norway, Chris Ward led his new team to a crucial victory, exploding for 25 points. His ability to step onto a new court and produce immediately is a testament to the “game-ready” environment EuroProBasket maintains. Ward credits his seamless transition to the elite conditioning and physical preparation emphasized at the academy, arriving in Norway ready to handle the physicality of the European game.
Chris Ward’s story is a blueprint for aspiring players. With the right coaching, a high-level network, and a commitment to the grind, the jump from high school to a team in Europe is within reach. Congratulations, Chris! We look forward to seeing you continue to dominate in Norway.
