Japan is next for Isaiah Skinner. The American guard has signed to play basketball in Japan for the 2026-27 season, his first season overseas, after a strong June 2026 at the European Summer League in Valencia, Spain.
He signed soon after the summer league ended and is already with his new team. Skinner is also the first EuroProBasket player to sign in Japan.
Skinner is a 6’5″ guard out of Xavier College Preparatory in Palm Desert, California. He built his résumé the long way, starting in junior college at Mt. San Jacinto College before two NCAA Division I seasons at USC Upstate in the Big South Conference.
At Mt. San Jacinto he was a two-time First Team All-Inland Empire Athletic Conference pick. He averaged 14.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 2021-22. In 2023-24 he took over, with 18.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 29.8 minutes a game, 89.4% shooting from the free throw line and 3C2A All-State honors.
At USC Upstate he got better every season. In 2025-26 he appeared in 32 games, more than doubled his assists from 27 to 57, raised his three-point shooting from 24.1% to 34.9% and made 85.7% of his free throws. He also made the 2026 Big South All-Academic Team as a Psychology major.
That is what a coach is getting: a guard who defends, moves the ball, makes his free throws and keeps adding to his game.
Skinner trained and played with EuroProBasket in Valencia in June 2026, and he produced right away. Over four summer league games he averaged 16.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 steals in under 20 minutes a game.
The details a scout circles were all there. He drew 4.0 fouls a game, went 12-of-13 from the line and shot 51.9% inside the arc. His team was +64 with him on the floor across the four games, and the steals were the same defensive activity he showed in college, now against international competition.
Isaiah Skinner did it with game film, stats and exposure in front of the right people. A Spanish coach working in Japan watched him at the European Summer League in Valencia, and Skinner signed in Japan soon after the June 2026 session. Roster spots for imports in Japan are limited, and players from around the world compete for them.
