In Spain, Noah Boyewa and Filipp Popovenko have earned a basketball tryout with the same club, the first chance either has had to play for a team outside his home country. The two teenage wings, one Swedish-Nigerian and one Ukrainian, earned the invitation while training in Valencia with EuroProBasket’s Euro Professional Program.
Who is Noah Boyewa?
Noah Boyewa is a 19-year-old right-handed shooting guard and small forward who has played for the Trelleborg Pirates in Sweden since 2019. He came up through the Swedish Youth Championships from U17 to U19 and was already playing senior men’s basketball while still in youth competition.
In the 2024-25 Basketettan season he played 27 games at 17, starting 10. He averaged 5.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 15.9 minutes, shot 43.8% from three and 42.9% inside the arc, and finished at +8.9 per game.
The next season he moved up to Superettan, and his role grew with it. Across 18 games he played 19.0 minutes a night and scored 6.2 points on 51.1% two-point shooting, adding 2.8 rebounds and 0.7 steals. A coach gets a physically strong wing who can defend multiple positions, finish, and knock down open shots.
Who is Filipp Popovenko?
Filipp Popovenko is an 18-year-old, 6’6″ shooting guard and small forward from Ukraine who graduated high school in 2026. He played his club basketball with Playmaker and Lokomotyv and was a Ukrainian champion in 2025.
His game starts on the glass. Across 77 games with Playmaker and Lokomotyv he totaled 366 points, 314 rebounds, 65 steals and 63 assists, the numbers of a wing who goes after the ball on both ends.
His most recent run in the Kyiv U19 Championship took that further. Playing for Playmaker, he averaged 12.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 7 games, shot 42% inside the arc, and scored a season-high 33 points. He also finished school with an IELTS 6.5 (B2) in English, which matters for a teenager walking into a locker room abroad.
Two first-timers in Valencia
EuroProBasket in Valencia is the first stretch of basketball either player has spent away from home, and nobody eases into it. Their days start with team practice on European systems and spacing, then a second session for skill and strength work, with games every week against Spanish opposition.
For two teenagers, that means older and stronger opponents and less time to make a read. Noah and Filipp have both played games against top competition in Spain, with every game posted on YouTube for teams to scout.
Can a teenager earn a basketball tryout in Spain?
Yes. Noah Boyewa earned his at 19 and Filipp Popovenko at 18, both during the Euro Professional Program’s 2026 pre-season block in Valencia. Age didn’t get either of them a look; production at home and how they competed in front of clubs did.
Noah’s senior minutes in Sweden and Filipp’s Kyiv U19 run gave each of them the most leverage for opportunities abroad. Spain runs one of the deepest league systems in Europe, and an invitation to practice with a club there is earned, not handed out.
