Spain is the next stop. Mick Schoemaker, a 21-year-old Dutch forward, has earned a basketball tryout in Spain with a club in Catalunya for the 2026-27 season.
From Rijswijk to Germany and back
Schoemaker is 6’8″ and plays the four. He came up at Lokomotief Rijswijk in the Netherlands, then played in Germany with EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the Regionalliga.
That German season is where the efficiency shows up. He went 18-for-23 inside the arc across 21 games, 78% from two, in a role that came out to roughly eleven minutes a night. Short minutes, high finish rate, and the kind of number a coach notices when he is looking for someone who will not waste possessions.
He went back to Lokomotief Rijswijk for the 2025-26 Promotiedivisie season, a full year of games at home. By 21 he had played organized basketball in three countries.
Five games in Valencia
In June 2025 he came to Valencia for the EuroProBasket European Summer League. Five games, 70 minutes, 17 rebounds.
Eight of those 17 came on the offensive glass. Nearly half his boards were the ones nobody claps for, the ones you only get by being the first body to move when the shot goes up.
That part travels. Shooting percentages move around from league to league. Effort on the offensive glass does not.
How long does it take to earn a basketball tryout in Spain?
For Mick Schoemaker it took fifteen months. He played the European Summer League in June 2025 and went home for a full Promotiedivisie season with Lokomotief Rijswijk. EuroProBasket kept sending film while his name moved through our scouting network. Interest surfaced at points during the season. Nothing concrete arrived until now.
That is worth sitting with if you are a player reading this. Most of the announcements you see are the fast ones. This one took a year and a season of real games in between, and it counts exactly the same.
What is basketball in Catalunya like?
Demanding. Catalunya is one of the densest basketball regions in Spain, with clubs at nearly every level, coaches who have been developing players for decades, and a long history of high-level competition. A roster spot there is hard to earn, and production there moves players up the system.
The club is in a coastal town on the Costa Brava. It is a good place to learn Spanish basketball from the inside: organized, physical, and detailed.
Does a tryout mean a contract?
No. A tryout is an invitation to compete for a spot, and that is all it is. Schoemaker earned the invitation with the season he played and the film behind it. What happens in the gym is on him.
