Head Coach Maros Kovacik

Maros Kovacik, born on June 4, 1978 in Slovakia, boasts an extensive coaching resume that highlights his versatility across various levels of the sport. His early career saw him develop through assistant and head coaching roles in Slovakian men’s leagues, including BK E.S.O. Lucenec, CHEMOSVIT Svit, and MBK Rieker Komarno. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for his remarkable ascent in the women’s game.

Coach Kovacik’s impact on women’s basketball has been particularly profound. He led Good Angels Kosice, a Euroleague Women Team, as head coach from 2012 to 2016, securing multiple Slovak Cup wins and Slovak Championships. During this period, he was twice recognized as Slovak Coach of the Year (2012, 2013) and even earned the prestigious Euroleague Women Coach of the Year award in 2013. His teams consistently reached the Euroleague Women Quarterfinals and achieved Middle European League Championships.

Beyond club success, Coach Kovacik has also made significant contributions to national team programs. He served as the Head Coach for the U20 Men Slovak National Team in 2011, and later, the U20 Women Slovak National Team from 2011 to 2013. Most notably, he was the Head Coach for the Slovak Women National Team from 2013 to 2017, and subsequently the Polish Women National Team from 2019 to 2022, leading them in Eurobasket competitions.

His international club experience further underscores his adaptability and success. He’s held head coaching positions with CCC Polkowice (Euroleague Women Team, Poland) across multiple stints (2016-2020), securing Polish Championships and Polish Cup victories. He also coached Nadezhda Orenburg (Euroleague Women Team, Russia) where he won a Russian Cup. His most recent role saw him as Head Coach for Tauron GTK Gliwice (PLK Men Team, Poland) from 2022 to 2023.

His extensive list of camps, clinics, and certifications is a testament to this, featuring participation in and lecturing at numerous international coaching clinics across Europe, and multiple Euroleague Online Clinics with esteemed coaches like Ettore Messina, Aito Garcia Reneses, and Zeljko Obradovic. He is also an Ambassador for the Euroleague Head Coaches Board (EHCB) Coaches Academy, showcasing his commitment to shaping the future of coaching. His recent study clinics with AS Monaco and the Spanish National Team demonstrate his ongoing pursuit of knowledge at the highest level.

Coach Kovacik’s linguistic proficiency in English, Czech, Polish, and his working knowledge of Russian, Croatian, and Serbian, further enhances his ability to connect with and instruct a diverse group of athletes at EuroProBasket. His comprehensive understanding of the game, combined with his experience coaching both men’s and women’s professional and national teams, provides an unparalleled learning environment.
